RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season by sweeping Laredo Community College 7-0 on Tuesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The win also marks the first-career victory for UTRGV head coach West Nott.  
 
The Vaqueros (1-9) won the doubles point for the third straight match as the team of freshmen Valeria Montero and Kristyna Mamicova defeated Tania Ramirez and Alexia Alfaro 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. 
 
The reigning back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Week of sophomores Katarina Sasaroga and Sandra Putz closed out doubles play with a 6-1 win over Evelyn Hernandez and Hannia Alvardo at the No. 1 spot. 
 
UTRGV dropped four games as it swept through singles play to clinch the win. Mamicova kept things rolling as she defeated Emily Renteria 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot before Montero defeated Alvardo 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot, which was the clinching win for the Vaqueros. 
 
Sasaroga added another victory at the No. 1 spot as she defeated Hernandez 6-1, 6-0. Junior Alicia Thal picked up the win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ramirez and it was Putz who closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alfaro at the No. 4 spot. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday, March 7 when it travels to Houston to face the University of Houston at 2 p.m.
