Women's Tennis Adds Valentina Urraco and Yaiza Vazquez for 2022-23

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros Women's Tennis Head Coach West Nott announced on Wednesday the addition of Valentina Urraco and Yaiza Vazquez for the 2022-23 academic season.

Urraco, originally from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, has been playing competitive tennis in Argentina since 2014. Urraco reached as high as 11th in the Argentina National Junior Ranking while reaching as high as 24th in the Argentina National Women's Ranking.

"We are very excited to have Valentina join our team," Nott said. "She is an extremely hard worker who has a big love and passion for the game. Her strongest physical asset will be her athleticism around the court with her speed and quickness. Most importantly, she has the mental characteristics we are looking for in a player with her intelligence and her ability to compete regardless of the situation. She will be a strong addition to the team."

Vazquez joins the program from Alpedrete, Madrid, Spain where she reached as high as 60th in the Spain National Junior Ranking. Vazquez nearly broke in to the top 100 in the Spain National Women's Ranking coming in at 107th

"We are thrilled to have Yaiza be part of our tennis program," Nott said. "Yaiza brings high energy and strong body language when on the practice court and in competition. She possesses many of the mental intangibles we are searching for in a player with her grit and toughness. Yaiza has a big serve backed up by strong groundstrokes where she can play from all parts of the court on offense and defense. Her positivity will have a strong impact on the team."

Urraco and Vazquez will join a program that will feature one freshman, six sophomores, three juniors and one senior this spring.
