SAN ANTONIO – Graduate students Aviana Goode and Anthony Magallon broke the program records in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams during day two of the UTSA Invitational on Friday at the Park West Athletics Complex.
 
Goode finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,605 points, surpassing the previous record of 4,460 points set by Brittani Hilton in 2005. Goode's best finish on Friday was in the long jump, placing second with a leap of 5.71 meters. She also came in fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:43.16 and ninth in the javelin at 22.52 meters.
 
Sophomore Uxia Pereira led the Vaqueros in the 800-meter run with a fourth-place time of 2:37.00. Freshman Lyford alum Kayleen May led the Vaqueros in the javelin with a throw of 26.48 meters.
 
Magallon, a Palmview alum, finished third in the decathlon with 6,402 points. Five Vaqueros surpassed the previous program record of 4,863 set by Christian Williams in 2017. Freshman Mission Veterans alum Alex Galvan finished eighth with 5,660 points. Junior Harlingen alum Roel Renteria placed ninth with 5,629 points. Sophomore La Feria alum came in 11^th with 5,341 points. Freshman PSJA alum Marco Guajardo finished 12^th with 4,887 points. 
 
Magallon placed second in two events on Friday, the pole vault (4.10 meters) and 1,500-meter run (4:50.63). Renteria won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.27. Galvan led the Vaqueros in the discus by placing fourth with a throw of 34.90 meters. Trevino led the Vaqueros in the javelin with a fifth-place throw of 44.78 meters.
 
The initial field events took place Friday as well, with graduate students Paul May and Desirea Buerge each finishing second in the shot put. May recorded the third-best mark in program history at 16.71 meters. Buerge posted the fifth-best performance at 15.36 meters.
 
Action resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. with field events. The track events start at 2 p.m.
