ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell 2-5 to the New Mexico State Aggies in the Western Athletic Conference opener on Friday at the Trailblazer Tennis Courts. 
 
The Aggies (2-6, 1-0 WAC) opened doubles with a win at the No. 1 spot but the Vaqueros (2-10) answered back as the team of redshirt sophomore Kataraina Sasaroga and freshman Isabelle Bahr picked up a 6-3 win over Chloe Gavino and Bellla Nguyen at the No. 2 spot. 
 
The Aggies clinched the doubles point with a win at the No. 3 spot. 
 
In singles, the Aggies got wins at the No. 1, 4, and 2 spots to clinch the win. Redshirt sophomore Sandra Putz got the Vaqueros on the board with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Lucija Josipovic at the No. 6 spot. 
 
Freshman Lea Karren followed with a three set win over Nguyen at the No. 5 spot. Karren won the first set 6-2 before falling 2-6 in the second. In the tiebreaker, Karren won a close one 10-8 to clinch the win before New Mexico State closed out the scoring with a win at the No. 3 spot. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they face Chicago State at 4:30 p.m. at the Trailblazer Tennis Courts.
