LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Third-seeded The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell to the second-seeded and host New Mexico State University Aggies 1-4 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Semifinals on Saturday at the NM State Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros (5-17) scored their lone point at No. 6 singles, as sophomore
Sandra Putz dispatched of
Kayla Fielder6-0, 6-1.
Freshman
Kristyna Mamicova was leading
Gavi Kalaga 3-0 at No. 4 in the third set when the match came to an end after taking the first set 7-6 and dropping the second set 4-6.
Freshman
Isabelle Bahr also forced a third set at No. 1, winning the second set 6-3 after dropping the first set 1-6, but she was down 2-5 in the third set to
Harsha Challa when the match ended.
The Aggies (6-13) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the top two courts in doubles. The duo of Putz and sophomore
Ana Platisa led Fielder and
Miranda Bishard 4-3 at No. 3 when the point was decided.
Chloe Gavino defeated sophomore
Katarina Sasaroga 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to put the Aggies up 2-0.
Then, after Putz got her win,
Bella Nguyen defeated Platisa 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 before Bishard pulled out a three-set win over freshman
Lea Karren at No. 3, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
