SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Leonardo Novella sits just four shots off the lead after the first day of the Lone Star Invitational to pace The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team on Monday at TPC San Antonio. 
 
Novella opened the tournament with a first round 78 before shaving off 10 strokes to post the field's second lowest second round score with a four-under 68. Novella sits in eighth place with a two-round total of 146 and is just four strokes off the lead held by UTSA's Hunter Bolt and Michael Rome who posted two-round totals of 142. 
 
Sophomore Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi is tied for 57^th after the first day after posting rounds of 78 and 80 for a two-round total of 158. Freshman Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque, who is making his collegiate debut, posted rounds of 80 and 82 as he is tied for 62^nd with a two-round total of 162. 
 
Senior Tennoshin Ogawa is tied for 70^th with a two-round total of 165 after posting rounds of 82 and 83. Freshman Taj Sutherland, who is also making his collegiate debut, is in 72^nd with a two-round total of 166 after rounds of 81 and 85. 
 
As a team, the Vaqueros are in 13^th with a two-round total of 630 after opening with a first round 317 and improving in the second round with a 313. 
 
Host UTSA leads after the first day with a two-round total of 573 after rounds of 293 and 280. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Tuesday for the final round of the Lone Star Invitational starting at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
