Fall Season Preview: Men's Golf

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The 2022 fall season kicks off a new era for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team under first-year head coach Houston Moore

The fall season brings a sense of excitement for both Coach Moore and the Vaqueros.

"It's definitely exciting," Moore said. "It's my first season at the helm here at UTRGV and I am happy we are going to get the season going. It has been a month of being here practicing with the guys, so we are excited to go out there and get a chance to compete."

The Vaqueros look to turn the page from a spring season that saw their streak of winning at least one tournament in a season since 2018 come to an end but hope to start a new streak this fall.

While it would be great to get a tournament win, Coach Moore knows that being productive and moving the program forward doesn't always revolve around wins.

"As far as expectations go, nothing too outcome based," Moore said. "I just want to have some good processes going into each event and when we get there stick to our processes. I want to see good course management, putting it in spots we need to, and staying poised in the moment. Things like that."

The Vaqueros will have four events this fall starting with the Tempest Collegiate, hosted by Texas State.

UTRGV will also compete at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate, and the Bear Brawl.

With two tournaments in Texas, one in New Mexico, and one in Florida, the Vaqueros will get a different variety of courses and environments throughout the fall.

"I think the fall will be a good test," Moore said. "We are going to play a bunch of different grasses, a bunch of different conditions, and a few different states. Different fields. Different regional opponents. I think just a mix of everything will definitely give us a good look at what we need to prepare for in the spring. We might not know everything in the fall, but we are going to have a good indication where we stand going into the spring."

The Vaqueros welcome back seven from the squad that competed in the spring in Andres Cortez, Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque, Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi, Sebastian Lundberg, Edmundo Mesta, Leonardo Novella, and Taj Sutherland

They also welcome in Javier Neira Garcia, Carlos Roldos, and Henry Wang. Garcia is a transfer from Keiser University where he was the 2021 NAIA Freshman of the Year and earned First Team All-American honors.

Roldos brings Division I experience after spending a season at Iowa last year.

The Vaqueros bring different levels of experience, but they all bring an eagerness to learn and to continue to push the program forward.

"It's a hard-working group," Moore said. "They are excited to be competing, almost as much as I am. There has been a lot of good so far. There have been some low scores shot and a lot of curiosity. They are eager and that is a good thing going forward."

The Vaqueros are definitely excited to get out there and compete and they will get their chance.

The fall presents an opportunity to reset somethings with the program and to build off somethings that have been engraved over the last few years.

Team chemistry has been a strength for the Vaqueros in recent years and with Coach Moore now at the helm, he wants to keep that the same.

Golf is a game where you can play your best and still not win but at the end of the day if the Vaqueros are controlling what they can control and doing things the right way, then the fall could be a successful one.

"I am not one for outcome predictions," Moore said. "But I think if we come closer as a team, we really implement these processes, and the guys buy into it then it will be a good step moving forward."
