SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team returns to the road for a Saturday showdown at St. Mary's University.
The meeting was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, but because of unique circumstances, only one match will be played at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex starting at 10 a.m. The Vaqueros (6-3) will be under the direction of UTRGV men's head tennis coach
Nathan Robinson when they face the Rattlers (5-0) while women's head coach
West Nott stays with his wife and their newborn baby.
Sophomore No. 1 player
Isabelle Bahr said the Vaqueros will have a little more pep in their step as they dedicate the match to the Nott family and its new addition born Friday.
"Our coach just had a baby, so we're super happy for him. We're trying to win for Theo," Bahr said. "It's going to be another tough lineup. Our match was pretty close with them last time. We're just looking to continue to build our confidence by being aggressive and having a positive attitude, enjoying the moment."
The all-time series between the two programs is tied at 3-3. They split a doubleheader in San Antonio in March 2021, with each team's victory coming via a 4-3 score. UTRGV is expecting another tight match with the Rattlers, and fortunately, the Vaqueros are rolling into the competition with some momentum.
UTRGV picked up a solid 6-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday and was motivated by a good crowd supporting it throughout. St. Mary's hasn't competed since it swept Hardin-Simmons on Feb. 19.
"I think that was a big win for us because that was a tough team, tough lineup, so the fact that we were able to not only beat them but also a lot of our lineup did a great job of overcoming adversity, it was a great win for us," Bahr said.
Bahr believes the confidence and positivity flowing through the Vaqueros will aid them on Saturday.
"This team has overcome a lot with injuries, things not going our way. We've always done a great job of being positive," Bahr said. "It's a journey, and we'll just keep climbing and keep going."
