SEATTLE – Graduate student La Joya High alum
Ricardo Mendoza ended his career with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros on a high note, winning the silver medal in the men's 800-meter run on Saturday at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Seattle.
Mendoza turned on the jets in the final 200 meters of the race, moving from fourth place up to second. This is the fourth time Mendoza has won a medal at the WAC track & field championships, combining outdoor and indoor, in the 800.
Both UTRGV men's triple jumpers, sophomores
Marco Guajardo and
Vincent Nguyen, reached the championship flight in the event. PSJA High alum Guajardo finished sixth and Nguyen placed eighth, both contributing to the team score.
Junior La Feria alum
Julian Trevino scored with a sixth-place finish in the men's javelin. Trevino set a new personal record and third-best mark in program history with a throw of 55.02 meters, which was a clutch toss on his last attempt. Guajardo finished 13
th in the event.
Sophomore
Samantha Gonzalez closed her impressive season strong, notching another personal record, this one in a 23
rd-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run. Sophomore
Alex Munoz finished 24
th in the men's 5,000-meter race.
UTRGV's relay teams put points on the board. The men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams both finished eighth. The Vaqueros men –
Jaleel Scott,
Ackeem Gordon,
Marco Guajardo and
Jermarrion Stewart – ran a season-best time of 41.98.
Jorge Salazar, Stewart, Mendoza and
Miguel Escamilla also ran a season's best in the men's 4x400-meter relay to finish sixth. The women's team of
Devon Goodwin, Elizabeth Ortiz, Jasmyn Tulloch and
Estrella Medellin ran a season-best to place 10
th in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Vaqueros finished ninth in the men's team standings and tied for 12
th in the women's standings.
