RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 86-76 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, on Friday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 1,012.
The Vaqueros (3-8) now trail the Islanders (5-5) 18.5 to 14.5 in the showdown standings. The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, is a tennis doubleheader on Jan. 28 at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center with the women playing at 11 a.m. and the men playing at 2 p.m.
In this game, junior
Hasan Abdul-Hakim scored a career-high tying 23 points with six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Freshman
J.J. Howard scored 12 points with a career-high three blocks. Senior
Ahren Freeman scored 11 points with seven rebounds, two steals and one block. Junior
Elijah Elliott scored 11 points with four rebounds. Senior
Daylen Williams finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high tying two blocks.
Garry Clark led the Islanders with 26 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
Jordan Roberts scored 19 points with five assists.
Marion Humphrey scored 14 points with six assists and four steals.
Dian Wright-Forde scored 11 points.
Elliott hit a jumper and a 3-pointer while Howard added a 3-point play to help the Vaqueros build an 8-4 lead.
The Vaqueros still led by four on an Abdul-Hakim 3-pointer that made the score 16-12 before the Islanders scored six-straight points to take the lead.
An Elliott 3 sparked a 10-2 run to put the Vaqueros up 26-20.
The Vaqueros still led by six at 32-26 on a Freeman dunk before the Islanders used a 10-2 run to go up 36-34.
The Islanders led by two with time ticking down before sophomore
Isaiah Barganier nailed a 3 to put the Vaqueros up 41-40 at halftime.
Freshman
C.J. Booker opened the second half with a 3-pointer to extend the Vaqueros' lead to 44-40.
After back-to-back layups tied the game, Howard used a layup and a 3-pointer to twice restore the Vaqueros' lead, the second time at 49-46. The Islanders, however, scored the next seven points to take the lead.
The Vaqueros tied the game at 59 on a Williams layup before a 9-3 Islanders run made the sore 68-62.
The Vaqueros went on a 7-0 run to take a 69-68 lead on an Abdul-Hakim free throw with 5:51 remaining, but the Islanders responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.
UTRGV visits Chicago State on Monday at 7 p.m.
