Women's Golf Set to Compete at Islander Classic as Part of Showdown on Monday

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team returns to action when they tee it up at the 2023 Islander Classic starting on Monday at the Corpus Christi Country Club as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.

Tournament Format

The first two rounds will be played on Monday with teams teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

UTRGV finished tied for third place at the Texas State Invitational to open up their spring season.
The Vaqueros posted a three-round score of 901 with rounds of 308, 300, and 293.
Mercedes Vega led the way as she finished in ninth place with a career-best three-round score of 220 after posting rounds of 77, 73, and career-best 70.
Sophia Tejeda finished tied for 13^th with a three-round score of 224 after turning in rounds of 76. 75, and 73.
Jackie Howard Gonzalez finished in 19^th with a three-round score of 227 with rounds of 77, 75, and 75.
Julie Lucio finished tied for 22^nd with a three-round score of 230 after rounds of 78, 77, and 75.
Samantha Garza finished in 33^rd with a three-round score of 235 with rounds of 79, 80, and 76.

Last Time at Islander Classic

UTRGV finished in fourth place in last year's Islander Classic after posting a program record three-round score of 890.
The Vaqueros used rounds of 300, 302, and a program record 288.
Julie Lucio finished tied for sixth with a three-round score of 219 with rounds of 74, 74, and 71.
Samantha Garza tied for 10^th with a three-round score of 222 with rounds of 74, 78, and 70.
Sophia Tejeda finished tied for 16^th with a three-round score of 225 with three rounds of 75.
Maria Jose Ramirez finished tied for 24^th with a three-round score of 229 after posting rounds of 77, 80, and 72.
Rachel Yu finished tied for 42^nd with a three-round score of 233 with rounds of 82, 75, and 76.
Mercedes Vega finished tied for 61^st with a three-round score of 238 after rounds of 85, 78, and 75.
Wofford won the team title with a three-round score of 884.
Corpus Christi's Anastacia Johnson won the individual title with a three-round score of 215 with rounds of 70, 70, and 75.

South Texas Showdown, Presented by Rally Credit Union

UTRGV currently leads in the Showdown standings 20-13
The team that finishes ahead in the standings will receive three points for their team.
The next Showdown event will be a men's and women's tennis matches on Feb. 25 in Corpus Christi.
Both teams split events last year with Corpus Christi gaining points at the Islander Classic and UTRGV getting points at the UTRGV Classic.
