CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team holds a four-shot lead after the first day of the Islander Classic on Monday at Corpus Christi Country Club. 
 
The Vaqueros finished the day with a two-round score of 617 after rounds of 303 and 314. UTRGV holds their four-shot lead over Houston Christian who turned in a two-round total of 621 and leads Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by 11 shots after they posted a two-round total of 628.
 
The Vaqueros have four players in the top-15 with sophomore Maria Jose Ramirez leading the way. Ramirez is tied for fifth place with a two-round total of 153 after posting rounds of 75 and 78 and she sits four shots back of Houston Christian's Elise Parel who turned in a two-round total of 149 with rounds of 72 and 77. 
 
Senior and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio is tied for eighth place with a two-round total of 155 after posting rounds of 75 and 80. Junior Sophia Tejeda is tied for 11^th with a two-round total of 157 after opening with an 81 and shaving off five strokes with a second-round 76. 
 
Junior Samantha Garza is tied for 14^th with a two-round total of 158 after carding rounds of 78 and 80. Junior Mercedes Vega is tied for 32^nd with a two-round total of 162 with rounds of 75 and 87. Sophomore Catherine Flores, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 67^th with a two-round total of 173 after posting rounds of 88 and 85 and sophomore and Edinburg High alum Madi Ozuna is tied for 69^th with a two-round total of 174 with rounds of 83 and 91.
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Tuesday for the final round of the Islander Classic with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
