SUGAR LAND – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team sits in 11
th place after the first day of the HCU Husky Invitational on Monday at Riverbend Country Club.
The Vaqueros posted a two-round total of 625 after carding rounds of 313 and 312. UTRGV is just two shots back of Lamar for 10
th place and five shots back of Texas A&M-Commerce for ninth place.
Junior
Mercedes Vega led the way for the Vaqueros on the first day as she sits tied for 27
th with a two-round total of 154. Vega posted a first round 79 before improving in the second round with a 75.
Freshman
Jackie Howard Gonzalez and junior
Samantha Garza are tied for 36
th with two-round totals of 156. Gonzalez posted back-to-back rounds of 78 while Garza posted rounds of 79 and 77.
Senior and Brownsville Veterans alum
Julie Lucio is tied for 53
rd with a two-round total of 160 after posting rounds of 78 and 82. Junior
Sophia Tejeda is tied for 61
st with a two-round total of 161 after rounds of 78 and 83.
Sam Houston leads in the team standings with a two-round total of 592 after rounds of 308 and 284. Houston Christian's Elise Parel holds the individual lead after posting a two-round total of 144 with rounds of 74 and 70.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Tuesday for the final round of the HCU Husky Invitational with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
