ABILENE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team earned its first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win Sunday, 4-3, over the Abilene Christian (ACU) Wildcats at the John T.L. Jones Tennis Building. 
 
UTRGV (6-6, 1-1 WAC) went up 1-0 after a good performance in the doubles session. The No. 3 duo of sophomore Daniela Rosenberger and senior Stefanie Wilske rolled in their 6-3 victory. Junior Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Marjorie Souza battled for a well-earned 7-6 (7:5) win in the No. 1 flight to secure the doubles point. Bahr/Souza are now 2-0 in WAC play. 
 
ACU (6-10, 0-2 WAC) tied the match at 1-1 with a singles win by Eva Arranz on the sixth court. But Bahr claimed a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 flight and Souza followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the third flight to extend the Vaqueros lead to 3-1. 
 
The Wildcats cut the lead to 3-2 as Maria Cascos took a tough win on the fourth court. 
 
Then, junior Lea Karren clinched the victory for UTRGV with a gritty finish in her No. 1 match. Karren won the first set 6-0 over Masha Vrsalovic, then held off a respectable comeback attempt to finish the job with the pressure on in a 7-6 (7:4) second set. 
 
Wilske was resilient in a tough No. 5 match. After dropping a competitive first set 6-7 (2:7), Wilske came back to take the second 6-2 to force a full third against Andrea Guerrero, but Guerrero held on for the 6-4 win. 
 
UTRGV returns to the Orville Cox Tennis Center for a pair of WAC matches, beginning with a 10 a.m. contest Friday against Grand Canyon.
