BLAINE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team sits in ninth place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship on Sunday at Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. 
 
The Vaqueros opened the WAC Championship with a first round team score of 313 and are just six shots back of Southern Utah and Utah Valley for seventh place. Sam Houston is in the lead after the first round after posting a 293. 
 
Senior and Brownsville Memorial alum Julie Lucio led the Vaqueros on Sunday with an opening round 76 as she is tied for 22^nd. Lucio is just six shots back of the individual lead held by Seattle U's Samantha Bruce, who posted a first round two-under par 70. 
 
Junior Samantha Garza is tied for 29^th with a first round 77. Junior Mercedes Vega is tied for 38^th after posting an opening round 79. Junior Sophia Tejeda and sophomore Maria Jose Ramirez are tied for 44^th with an opening round of 81. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Monday for the second round of the WAC Championship with their first group teeing off at 10:50 a.m.
