RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced the women's tennis All-WAC awards Wednesday ahead of the conference tournament and three members of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team were recognized.
Sophomore
Marjorie Souza was voted to the All-WAC Singles Second Team. This is the second year in a row Souza has received this honor. Souza went 8-1 in conference singles matches, with seven of those victories coming in the No. 3 flight and one in the fourth flight. After dropping her first match of the WAC season, Souza went on an incredible run to end the conference campaign on an eight-match winning streak. Souza is 12-7 in spring dual matches and 18-9 overall this 2022-23 season in singles.
Junior
Lea Karren and sophomore
Barbara Martinez were named to the All-WAC Doubles Second Team. The duo went 6-3 in conference, playing seven matches in the No. 1 flight. They went on a four-match conference winning streak in the middle of the season. Karren/Martinez are 12-4 overall, playing all of their matches together in the spring season.
All-WAC honorees were voted on by the conference's head coaches.
"Marjorie has been extremely consistent in her approach to practices, developing her game, and putting in the work over the last year," UTRGV head coach
West Nott said. "She is very deserving of this award after leading the team in WAC wins. She does it with the right team-first attitude. She is a pleasure to watch and we all love seeing her grow into more of a team leadership role.
"Lea and Barbara are electric to watch with their energy," Nott continued. "They surprise me every time they take the court with the shots they pull off. They have been able to knock off some tough teams and they do it with pizzazz. I love seeing them get recognition for their strong doubles play. They bring out the best in their teammates on gameday. They are the heart and soul of our team with their moxie and style."
The #3 Vaqueros will open the WAC Tournament Thursday at 12 p.m. against #6 New Mexico State at the Arlington Tennis Center.
