AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros outdoor track & field program posted four first-place finishes during the final day of the Texas Invitational Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium & Soccer Field.
The women's relay teams accounted for half of those wins, sweeping the relays and making two entries into the outdoor program record books.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the team of junior
Aisha Gay, graduate student
Jada Hoffman, junior
Yaria Akers and freshman
Symoria Adkins clocked in at 46.42 to finish first. It's the No. 2 performance in program history, sitting behind the same team's program record set last week in Houston.
Freshmen
Ashley Lingueno, Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo, Lani Brewer and Gay combined to win the women's 4x400-meter relay in 3:48.57, good for the eighth fastest time in program history.
Joining those Vaqueros on the top of the podium in running events was freshman
Abraham Morales, who won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and shaved eight seconds off his personal best, clocking in at 9:31.01. Graduate student
Marlene Gutierrez had another good outing in the women's hammer throw, marking 60.94 meters to win the event and take the No. 3 spot in program history. She now owns the top three hammer throws in the outdoor record books.
Akers also entered the record books in the women's 100-meter dash, running 11.85 to place 14
th. It's tied for the fifth-fastest race in program history. In the men's 100-meter dash, senior
Yashawn Hamilton ran 10.60 to place 19
th and take the No. 8 spot in the men's program record books.
Freshman
Aaron Cooper marked a PR of 14.66 meters to finish ninth in the men's triple jump. It's the seventh-best jump in outdoor program history. The men's 4x100-meter relay team of redshirt sophomore

Sam Johnson II ran the ninth-fastest time in program history, 41.23, to finish seventh.
The women's hurdles squad also had a good day. Adkins finished 10
th in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.05, and junior
Uxia Pereira took 14
th in 14.16. Those are the No. 6 and No. 6 times in the event in program history, and it's a PR for Adkins.
Freshman PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz notched a big PR in the women's 5,000-meter run, taking second in 18:14.45.
In total, UTRGV student-athletes tallied nine personal records during the final day of the meet. Next up for the Vaqueros will be the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships beginning May 11 in Nacogdoches.
