RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field graduate student Marlene Gutierrez has been named the TicketSmarter WAC Outdoor Women's Field Athlete of the Week. 
 
Gutierrez set a new UTRGV outdoor program record in the women's hammer throw on Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational as she launched a massive throw of 61.80 meters to finish eighth. That throw has her ranked No. 1 on the WAC performance list and moves her up to No. 23 in the national standings. 

Gutierrez has entered the program record books at all three meets this outdoor season, improving from week to week. She now holds the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 best hammer throws in program history. 
 
This is the second consecutive WAC recognition for UTRGV track & field after freshman Jedidiah Udunna won men's field athlete of the week on March 29. UTRGV's next meet will be at the Cactus Cup April 15 in Kingsville.
