Lucio, Tejeda, and Vega Named WGCA All-American Scholars

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced on Thursday that graduate student and Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum Julie Lucio and juniors Sophia Tejeda and Mercedes Vega of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's golf team are 2022-23 WGCA All-American Scholars.
 
To be named a WGCA All-American Scholar, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have played in at least 50 percent of the team's tournaments. 
 
Lucio, Tejeda, and Vega are racking up the academic accolades, as all three earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and Fall Athletic Director's Honor Roll honors. They are also set to be recognized as Academic All-WAC honorees in the coming weeks. Lucio and Vega were part of the Spring AD Honor Roll as well.
 
In total, 1,401 women golfers from 378 programs around the country earned WGCA All-American Scholars honors.
 
The WGCA was founded in 1983 and is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. The WGCA represents over 700 coaches throughout the United States and is dedicated to educating, promoting, and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
