Western Athletic Conference Announces Scheduling Initiative With CUSA

UTRGV to Face Florida International and Sam Houston

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Thursday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team will be facing Florida International University and Sam Houston as part of a head-to-head scheduling initiative with Conference USA that was announced on Thursday.

The Vaqueros will host Florida International in their home opener on Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse while making the trip to Sam Houston on Dec. 30.

"I think it's big time," UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord said. "You grew up watching the BIG12/SEC Challenge or the Big 10 versus the ACC and now we have the WAC versus Conference USA. It's a really neat idea that our commissioner and his staff put together. I think it will help us in scheduling. It's the one of the hardest things to do in college basketball and we are getting a guaranteed two games against a quality conference with good opponents. We are excited about that."

The initiative will feature a total of 36 games (18 in each gender) across both men's and women's basketball that will be contested in 2023-24.
