RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Tuesday that junior guard Elijah Elliott of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is the WAC Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week after helping the Vaqueros to a 77-74 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday.
 
Elliott scored a game-high tying 21 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field plus 4-of-5 shooting from the line with three rebounds, three assists and four steals.
 
Elliott is averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals while shooting 35.9% from the field and 75% from the foul line in 13 games (12 starts). He's reached double-figures in scoring 12 times while leading the Vaqueros in scoring six times and assists four times.
 
Elliott leads the WAC and ranks 34^th in the nation in steals (29) and 36^th in the nation in steals per game (2.23).
 
UTRGV resumes WAC play on Thursday at 12 p.m. against Stephen F. Austin at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. This game is both faculty & staff and Winter Texan appreciation day. Current UTRGV faculty and staff receive free admission with an employee ID. Winter Texans will be able to purchase tickets for a discounted price of $6. The game also features the Cane's Challenge. If the Vaqueros win, all fans in the fieldhouse will receive coupons for buy one, get one free box combos at Raising Cane's on their way out.
