RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team will be enjoying an exciting California road trip with a pair of matches coming up this week.
The Vaqueros (5-4) will be doing plenty of sightseeing and going on adventures to build team camaraderie, including making a stop to watch some elite pro tennis at the Indian Wells Open. They'll face two new opponents on the road.
First, UTRGV will play the UC Riverside Highlanders (2-10) at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the SRC Tennis Courts. Next, they'll face the UC San Diego Tritons (2-10) at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, California.
The Vaqueros have been playing good tennis through the first part of the season, battling in wins and tight losses. In their last match, they dropped a tough 4-3 match to Texas State, but they saw needed improvement in their doubles play as they tabbed their third doubles point of the season.
Junior
Marjorie Souza continues to roll in the No. 1 singles spot, holding a 6-1 record in the top flight and a 7-2 overall record this spring. Sophomore powerhouse
Yaiza Vazquez has elevated her game nicely in her second season and is a reliable performer at No. 4.
UTRGV's singles play has been solid and the doubles production is coming together better and better every day. This road trip will be a beneficial week for the squad in building the chemistry of the team and giving the Vaqueros a chance to play loose and test themselves against fresh opponents.
