BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros cross country teams competed at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational Friday at the Watts Cross Country Course and the women's team captured a solid top 20 finish behind three top 100 individual placings and five personal bests.
Junior
N Vanee Anchike, senior PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz and junior
Kailey Salazar led the Vaqueros in the women's 6K race. Anchike took 67
th with a PR time of 21:15.1. She was followed closely by Cruz (21:22.6) and Salazar (21:36.7), who finished 74
th and 88
th, respectively, as they both lowered their 6K times.
Senior
Lilliana Guerrero came in 124
th and sophomore Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo rounded out the scoring with a personal best time of 22:39.0 to take 173
rd. Sophomore Rio Grande City alum
Morgan Ramos also ran well, taking 241
st with a PR time of 23:46.2.
Anchike and Cruz entered the program record book as they paced the impressive day for UTRGV. Anchike ran the fifth-best 6K race in program history and Cruz now sits at No. 8. They led UTRGV to a 19
th place finish out of 37 teams – the best women's team finish at the Arturo Barrios Invitational since the Vaqueros were 13
th of 25 in 2019.
UTRGV was one of eight Southland Conference (SLC) teams at the meet and finished third among the conference competitors, coming out ahead of Incarnate Word, McNeese, New Orleans, Lamar and Nicholls. The Vaqueros finished behind Stephen F. Austin which took fifth and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which was 11
th. Wake Forest won the women's team title and Texas A&M was first in the men's team standings.
Sophomore
Nirmit Dahiya made his UTRGV debut and ran a personal best in the 8K, clocking in at 24:39.9 to lead the Vaqueros men with a 107
th place finish. Senior
Abraham Morales took 169
th and also tabbed a personal best with his time of 25:23.9. Freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Roehl Rodriguez had another solid run and was 201
st with a time of 25:45.4 while sophomore Mission Veterans alum
Manuel Flores was 235
th in 26:14.4.
UTRGV's next meet will be the Southland Conference Championships on Oct. 31 in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
