Women's Soccer Defeats Houston Christian University For First SLC Win of the Season

HOUSTON – With the match scoreless and less than two minutes left, sophomore Isabella Burtini scored the game-winning goal to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team the 1-0 victory over the Houston Christian University Huskies on Thursday at Sorrels Field for their first Southland Conference victory of the season.

The Vaqueros (4-7-1, 1-3 SLC) and the Huskies (6-6-1, 1-2-1 SLC) looked like they were heading for a scoreless draw until the 89th minute.

Junior Olivia Smith stole ball and sent it into the box where graduate student Savannah Frisby took a shot that was saved by HCU goalie Emmy McKeon. The shot ricocheted to Burtini in front of the net as she put it into the net for the game-winner.

The Vaqueros were aggressive in the second half as they took 13 of their 19 shots, including three on goal. UTRGV outshot HCU 19 to 13 and 7 to 4 on goal.

Junior Emilia Compian and the defensive back line came up big for UTRGV denying the Huskies their opportunities for a goal. Compian finished the match with three saves.

The Vaqueros will be back in action on Oct. 5 when they host the UIW Cardinals at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is free, but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at GoUTRGV.com/SoccerPass. A clear bag policy is in place at the facility.
