WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team saw two student-athletes advance to the semifinals of their respective singles draws Friday at the H-E-B Invitational, hosted by Baylor.
Sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs secured a tough straight-sets win over Kansas State's (KSU) Margaret Jaraczewski, taking the first 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-4. Buijtenhuijs carried the momentum into the second set, winning 6-3. Buijtenhuijs will advance to the take on Gabriella Kellner from Iowa State (ISU) in the east semifinals of the Yellow Draw.
In the Pink Draw, sophomore
Mariia Bakhtina earned a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Simryn Jacob from Kansas (KU). Bakhtina will battle against UT San Antonio's (UTSA) Ayra Salim in the east semifinals.
Senior
Yaiza Vazquez battled in the red draw taking KU's
Meg McCarty the distance but ultimately falling. Vazquez won the first 5-7 before dropping the next two sets 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
The Vaqueros will continue their run at the H-E-B Invitational Saturday with doubles set to begin at 9 a.m. The competition will be livestreamed via Baylor's
PlaySight account and fans can follow along on the
