Men's Basketball Falls at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 79-63 to the Northwestern State University Demons on Monday at Prather Coliseum. 
 
The Vaqueros (13-10, 5-7 SLC) got 15 points from redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. as he added six rebounds. Graduate student DK Thorn scored 10 points with freshman Jaylen Washington adding a career-high nine points and fifth year K.T. Raimey and senior Cliff Davis also adding nine points each. 
 
The Demons (10-12, 7-5 SLC) had four players in double-figures led by Micah Thomas, who scored 18 points. Landyn Jumawan made five three-pointers for 15 points while Addison Patterson added 13 points and Love Bettis chipped in with 12 points. 
 
The Vaqueros got out to the early 12-7 lead on three-pointers from Thorn, Fleming Jr. and two from Davis. The Demons put together a 16-0 run to grab control the rest of the first half that saw the Vaqueros commit nine turnovers. 
 
Redshirt sophomore Marshal Destremau made a layup and knocked down a jumper to get UTRGV within 31-21 but the Demons took at 37-23 lead into the locker room. 
 
In the second half, the Demons extended their lead to 45-25 after a three-point play by Patterson but Fleming Jr. answered with one of his own. After the Demons took their biggest lead of the night at 55-31, Washington sparked a 9-0 that saw him record a steal, make three-straight buckets and record an assist on a Raimey three-pointer that cut the lead to 55-40 with 11:32 left to play. 
 
The Demons pushed their lead back to 61-40 after three-straight buckets but the Vaqueros had one more push left as Fleming Jr. led a 19-8 UTRGV run to get within 69-59 with 2:45 left to play but the Demons kept the Vaqueros at bay the rest of the way. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lamar on Saturday at 6 p.m.
