SAN ANTONIO – After opening the spring season at home with a win, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's (UTRGV) women's tennis team is hitting the road for the first time this season.
The Vaqueros (1-0) will play the St. Mary's (StMU) Rattlers (1-0) on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex in San Antonio. UTRGV is 5-4 all-time against the Rattlers and has won the last two matches in the past two years. Last season, UTRGV went to San Antonio and picked up a 4-3 win.
UTRGV is riding some momentum after defending home courts in the season opener, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-1. Senior
Kristal Dule rolled in her first match in the No. 1 singles flight and the Vaqueros saw three newcomers –
Rhea Makesar, Hitakamya Narwal and
Mariia Bakhtina – capture their first singles victories. UTRGV swept doubles in a solid team effort.
The Vaqueros know St. Mary's isn't a team to overlook. The Rattlers are headlined by
Selina Wu, who was ranked in the top 50 in the fall NCAA Div. II singles rankings. UTRGV had a productive week of practice to prepare for the match and the student-athletes are ready to compete.
