HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team scored eight runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to come from behind and beat the Houston Cougars 10-6 on Saturday at Schroeder Park.
With the Vaqueros (2-4) down 5-0 in the fifth, senior
Hank Warren grounded out to drive in graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas and make the score 5-1.
In the sixth, junior
Armani Raygoza launched a 421' home run to start the inning. Then, after junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez walked, junior
Easton Moomau sent a 412' blast to right center to bring the Vaqueros within 5-4.
In the seventh, senior
Ethan Edinger drew a leadoff walk and Warren doubled off
Chris Scinta (1-1) to put runners in scoring position for junior
Rocco Garza Gongora, who blooped a single to left to tie the game. After a wild pitch put runners at second and third again, Raygoza grounded out to give the Vaqueros the lead. After a pitching change, Garza Gongora came home on a passed ball. Ramirez then got plunked and moved to second on a wild pitch, setting him up to score on an RBI-single by senior
Thomas Williams to make the score 8-5.
Williams finished 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
That made a winner of sophomore
Harrison Thayer (2-0), who pitched 3.1 innings of relief, striking out five. The lone blemish was a seventh inning home run by
Xavier Perez to make the score 8-6.
Villescas added a two-run single in the ninth to complete the scoring while finishing 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
Tre Broussard hit a two-run home run in the first and later in the inning,
Carter Sintek scored on a balk, as the Cougars (5-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Perez led off the third with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.
Jackson LaLima homered in the fourth to put the Cougars up 5-0.
