BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team opened Southland Conference play with a 6-2 loss to the Lamar Cardinals on Friday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals (6-4, 1-0 SLC) jumped on graduate student
Sergio Lopez (0-2) in the first, as with second and third and nobody out,
Tab Tracy hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.
Lopez struck out a season-high four in a season-high 5.0 innings
The Vaqueros (3-6, 0-1 SLC) responded in the third when, with two on and two out, junior
Easton Moomau hit an RBI-single off
A.J. Kostic (2-0) to tie the game.
In the third, the Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out, setting up an RBI-single by
Braden Benton, a sacrifice fly by
Brayden Evans, and an RBI-single by
Theo Kummer to make the score 4-1.
With one out in the fifth, Benton doubled and Evans hit an RBI-single to put the Cardinals up 5-1.
The Vaqueros got one back in the sixth, as with junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez at second and two outs, junior
Andrew Taylor pinch hit and came up with an RBI-single to make the score 5-2.
The Cardinals got that run back in the bottom of the inning when
Beau Durbin hit a two-out, RBI-triple to make the score 6-2.
That was the lone run against senior
Anthony Garcia, who struck out four in a season-high 2.2 innings of two-hit relief.
Graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas was the lone Vaquero with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
UTRGV and Lamar play the middle game of the series on Saturday at 5 p.m. on
ESPN+.
