JACKSON, Miss. — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team earned their second win of the season Friday, defeating the Jackson State (JSU) Tigers, 4-1, at the Jackson State Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros set the tone with the doubles point. On court one, junior
Will Roberts and graduate student
Sam Whitehead earned their fourth doubles win of the season, defeating the duo of
Hung-Yu Chen and
Ching Chang Chiu, 6-2.
One minute later, junior
Paolo Bonaguro and sophomore
Tsz Him Chan earning their second win of the season, defeating
Federico Pickenstainer and
Jhoan Vaquero, 6-2 to secure the doubles point for the Vaqueros in only 17 minutes.
Singles action got started with sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel, who dropped the first game to Vaquero, before rattling off six-straight to win the first 6-1. In set two, Young went down 2-0 but bounced back, winning four in row, and later won the set 6-4.
The remaining singles matches were decided in straight sets.
On court one, Whitehead went wire-to-wire in a dominant 6-2 first set victory. Set two was more of a back-and-forth battle, as Pickenstainer and Whitehead were knotted at 3-3. However, Whitehead pulled away, winning the near hour and a half matchup, with a 6-4 win in the second.
On court two, junior
Santiago Serrano clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over
Ching Chang Chiu.
Two matches went unfinished in this match as Roberts and Isqueiro lead before their matches were abandoned. Roberts was ahead, 7-5, against Chan and Isqueiro lead, 6-4, against Ayar.
UTRGV will complete their road trip and face Alcorn State Saturday at 10 a.m.
