BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Lamar Cardinals 1-0 on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals (7-4, 2-0 SLC) scratched across a run against sophomore
Harrison Thayer (2-1) in the first, as
Beau Durbin led off with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI-groundout by
Tab Tracy to make the score 1-0.
That was it against Thayer, who pitched 6.0 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out four while allowing three walks.
Graduate student
Colton Vercoe pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
Chris Olivier (2-0) started for the Cardinals and pitched 7.0 hitless innings, striking out 11 while walking two.
Junior
Chayton Fischer recorded the Vaqueros' (3-7, 0-2 SLC) first hit, a 1-out ground-rule double in the eighth off
Fabian Ramirez. The Vaqueros went on to load the bases before
Nathan Darden induced a double play to end the inning.
Darden recorded the final five outs for his third save.
UTRGV and Lamar conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. on
