Cruz Sets Program Record as Indoor Track & Field Opens Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior PSJA High alum Faith Cruz set an indoor program record as she cruised to victory in the women's 5,000-meter run as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) indoor track & field teams opened the Charlie Thomas Invitational at Texas A&M's Fasken Indoor Track & Field facility Friday.

Cruz earned her win in 17:09.33, beating the second-place finisher from Texas A&M by nearly 21 seconds. She made one of eight entries into the indoor record books for UTRGV on Friday. The Vaqueros also totaled five personal bests to open the meet. The Charlie Thomas Invitational wraps up Saturday with the Vaqueros getting underway at 2 p.m.

Freshman Antwoine Warren made his collegiate debut with a splash, notching the No. 2 mark in program history in the men's high jump. Warren cleared 2.14 meters to finish tied for second, beating four SLC opponents. Redshirt freshman Paul Agba tabbed a personal best by clearing 1.95 meters.

Junior Keamonie Archie and Warren had good outings in men's long jump, both making entries into the UTRGV record books. Archie was fourth with a jump of 7.36 meters, a season-best which tied his own sixth-best mark in program history. Warren followed in fifth with a jump of 7.24 meters, good for the No. 10 spot in the record books.

Senior Kaliyah Poston was the top Southland Conference (SLC) finisher in the women's 200-meter dash, taking 15th in a loaded field in 24.25. Sophomore Jizzale Davis followed in 18th in 24.32. Poston and Davis tabbed the fifth and ninth best races in program history as both ran season bests.

All three Vaqueros were the top SLC finishers in the men's 200-meter dash. Junior Joshua Mascall led the trio in 21.47 to finish 15th, tying the eighth-best indoor time in program history. Sophomore Richard Young ran a personal record 21.54 to finish 17th, and senior Corin Burns followed in 21.64.

Junior Brownsville Hanna alum Alejandro Arellano ran a personal best time of 47.92 to finish 10th in the men's 400-meter dash. His time takes the No. 10 spot in indoor program history. Junior Treasure Vallerie led UTRGV's women's 400-meter dash competitors by taking 22nd with a time of 55.79.

Senior Efe Latham only needed one mark to reach the final of the women's weight throw and finished ninth with a toss of 15.70 meters. The Vaqueros women's long jumpers tabbed three bests, led by senior Nayla Harris who jumped a season-best 5.66 meters to finish 15th.
