LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 11-7 on Tuesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The Vaqueros (7-10) got off to a good start, as junior
Rocco Garza Gongora doubled and senior
Thomas Williams singled. One out later, junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.
That was it until the fourth, when junior
Easton Moomau led off with a single and senior
Hank Warren walked. Junior
Chayton Fischer followed with an RBI-single and then senior
Ethan Edinger bunted down the first base line to bring home Warren, making the score 8-3.
In the fifth, Williams led off with a single and junior
Armani Raygoza doubled. Williams scored on a wild pitch that moved Raygoza to third. After Ramirez got plunked, Moomau hit into a fielder's choice to bring home Raygoza and make the score 9-5.
The Vaqueros added two runs in the ninth. Williams hit a two-out double and scored on a Raygoza single. Then, after a single by junior
Evan Janner, Moomau hit an RBI-single.
Williams finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Raygoza went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Moomau finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a runs scored. Ramirez went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the bottom of the first, the Ragin' Cajuns (13-4) put runners on second and third with one out against senior
Wyatt Wiatrek (0-1), setting up an RBI-groundout by
Rigoberto Hernandez and an RBI-double by
Colt Brown to make the score 2-1.
In the second, the Ragin' Cajuns put runners on the corners with one out ahead of a
Drew Markle RBI-single and a
Lee Amedee RBI-double that brought home
Donovan LaSalle before Markle scored on an error. Then, with runners on the corners and two outs, Brown walked and Hernandez stole third. During the next at-bat, Brown took off for second to draw a throw and got in a rundown long enough for Hernandez to score to put the Ragin' Cajuns up 6-1.
In the third, the Ragin' Cajuns put runners at second and third with one out, setting up an RBI-groundout by
Griffin Hebert. During the next at-bat,
Blaze Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-1.
The Ragin' Cajuns went up 9-3 in the fourth when, with runners on the corners and nobody out, Brown hit into a double play to score Amedee.
In the seventh, the Ragin' Cajuns put runners on the corners with nobody out. On a pickoff attempt, the throw sailed wide, allowing Hernandez to score. One batter later, Rodriguez grounded out to bring home a run making the score 11-5.
Parker Smith (1-0) earned the win by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
UTRGV opens a three-game Southland Conference series at Nicholls on Friday at 6 p.m. on
ESPN+.
