HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Rice Owls 7-3 Tuesday at Reckling Park.
Owls (13-9) starter
Jeremiah Arnett opened the game by plunking junior
Rocco Garza Gongora and walking senior
Thomas Williams. Two outs later, junior
Easton Moomau and senior
Hank Warren hit back-to-back RBI-singles to put the Vaqueros (10-11) up 2-0.
In the bottom of the first, though, the Owls put runners on the corners with nobody out against graduate student
Colton Vercoe (0-3), setting up a
JC Davis RBI-single. Two outs later,
Gage Kutter Webb and
Mason Ashlock hit RBI-singles to put the Owls up 3-2
Williams led off the third with a double and scored on a two-out RBI-double by Moomau to tie the game at 3.
Moomau finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
In the bottom of the third, the Owls put runners at second and third with one out, leading to a Webb RBI-single and an Ashlock sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3.
In the fourth,
Cole Green led off with a double,
Hiram Bocachica Jr. hit an RBI-triple, and
Colin Robson hit a sacrifice fly to put the Owls up 7-3.
The Vaqueros' bullpen put up zeros from there, as junior
Carlos Vallejos pitched 2.0 perfect innings of relief, striking out two, senior
Aaron Sanchez struck out one in a perfect sixth, junior
Ruben Gonzalez struck out one in a hitless seventh, and senior
Steven Oliva struck out one in a perfect eighth.
Ethan Atchley (1-1) struck out three in 2.0 perfect innings of relief for the win.
UTRGV opens a three-game series at reigning Southland Conference Tournament Champion Houston Christian University Friday at 6:30 p.m.
