SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team posted the lowest second round of the Southland Conference (SLC) Championship with an even par 288 to get within one shot of the lead on Tuesday at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
The Vaqueros sit with a two-round total of 580 while Houston Christian University carded a second round 295 for a two-round total of 579. UTRGV was once again solid down the stretch as they combined to go five-under over the last five holes.

Miriam Barcalova leading the way as she is tied for second place. Sophomore
Pitchayapa Pungpho is tied for fifth with sophomore
Zoe Hobbs and junior
Natalia Rodriguez tied for 10
th. Junior
Preston Saiz is tied for 17
th.
Barcalova carded a second round two-under par 70 for a two-round total of 142. She is just one shot off the lead held by Houston Christian's Sara Pihlajamaki with a two-round 141. Barcalova birdied three of the first five holes as she turned in a front nine 34 before carding a back nine 36.
Pungpho carded a second round even par 72 to get within four shots off the lead with a two-round total of 145. Pungpho carded a front nine two-over 38 before bouncing back in the back nine with a two-under 34 using three birdies in her last five holes, including back-to-back on hole 17 and 18.
Hobbs posted a second round 75 for a two-round total of 148. Hobbs opened with a front nine 39 but bounced back in the back with seven pars, one birdie and a bogey in the back nine for an even par 36.
Rodriguez posted her second-straight round of 74 for a two-round total of 148. Rodriguez's only blemish in the front nine with an eight on the sixth hole as she finished with a 40 but she birdied three of her last five holes to post a two-under 34 in the back nine.
Saiz had the biggest improvement in the second round as she shaved off five strokes with a second round even par 72 for a two-round total of 149. Saiz used two birdies and two bogeys alongside five pars to past a front nine 36 before posting an even par 36 on the back nine with one birdie, one bogey, and seven pars, including five-straight to close out her round.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Wednesday for the final round of the SLC Championship with their first group teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
