BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis fell to the No. 2 seed Northwestern State University (NSU) Lady Demons, 4-1, Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference (SLC) Women's Tennis Tournament at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
In doubles, UTRGV picked up the first win of the session when sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs and senior
Valentina Urraco earned a 6-1 win over
Pika Doberlet and
Lolita Hukasian. Buijtenhuijs and Urraco used a balanced mix of defensive groundstrokes and aggressive net play to separate during the match. NSU earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
In singles play, the Vaqueros were led by junior
Rhea Makesar on court three. Makesar opened the match with a service hold on deuce point to take a 1-0 lead. Her opponent,
Maria Farina tied the set at 1-1 before Makesar won four straight games to take a 6-1 advantage. Makesar broke to win the first set 6-2. Makesar dominated in the second set, winning the first four games. Farina snapped the skid, but Makesar won the next two games to win the second 6-1.
On court one, Buijtenhuijs was locked in a tight battle with
Honoka Umeda. While leading 3-2 in the first, Buijtenhuijs broke Umeda's serve to take a 4-2 lead. However, Umeda bounced back to take a 5-4 lead in the set. Buijtenhuijs broke back to knot the set a 5-5, but Umeda held on, winning the first 7-5. The second set started in similar fashion as the match was abandoned at 2-2.
Meanwhile, on court six, Urraco trailed 4-2 in the first set, but bounced back to close the gap at 5-4. However, Doberlet closed out the set, winning 6-4. In the second, Urraco and Doberlet traded games as the match was abandoned at 3-3.
The Lady Demons clinched the match with wins on courts five, four, and two in singles play.
