RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams will continue their busy month of April by competing Friday and Saturday at Baylor's Michael Johnson Invitational at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco, Texas. 
 
The Vaqueros are working on a short week after a long trip to California for the Bryan Clay Invitational. But they're in a groove right now, too, and they'll use that momentum as they chase more big marks and fast times against some tough competition. 
 
Teams participating at the Michael Johnson Invitational include the hosting Bears, Texas Tech, SMU, TCU, Louisiana Tech, Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin, North Texas, UIW, Sam Houston State, Prairie View A&M, Tarleton, Buffalo, and others. 
 
UTRGV made moves in the Southland Conference (SLC) and national rankings after its weekend in California, which included setting one meet record and five program records. The mid-distance crew was particularly impressive, led by the women's 800-meter run #EventSquad.
 
The quartet of N Vanee Anchike, Lilliana Guerrero, Kailey Salazar and Mia Picazo all ran personal bests in the event and are now ranked in the top 10 in the conference, with Anchike sitting at No.  1 in the SLC and No. 14 in the NCAA West. UTRGV's women's 800 event squad is ranked 21^st in the nation and third in the South Central, behind only Arkansas and Texas. 
 
The men's 110-meter hurdles squad is also ranked 21^st in the nation and leads the SLC. Jefferson Jean leads the group and is 45^th in the nation with his program record, tabbed at the Bryan Clay Invitational. The men's 400-meter dash crew is 25^th in the nation and second in the conference, led by Joshua Mascall, who is 41^st on the NCAA West qualifying list. 
 
UTRGV has three weeks until the SLC Outdoor Championship and two regular season meets remaining. Both will offer strong competition and give the Vaqueros a good look at some conference foes.
