RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that sophomore
Jizzale Davis of the track & field team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Davis shined at the Southland Conference (SLC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend securing four total medals – one gold and three silver. Davis' efforts helped the Vaqueros finish second at the championships.
In the final day of the meet, the team of redshirt junior

Kailyah Poston set the tone, taking gold in the 4x100-meter relay with a blazing time of 44.74, the second-fastest time in program history.
Next up were Davis' two individual events, the 100- and 200-meter dashes. In the 100-meter dash, Davis earned silver with a time of 11.42, the third fastest time in program history. Then, in the 200-meter dash, Davis took silver with a program record time of 23.30.
Davis capped off the meet with by helping the Vaqueros set a new program record in the 4x400-meter relay and earn her third silver medal of the meet with a 3:37.17 finish. The race also catapulted UTRGV into second, jumping the hosting Stephen F. Austin.
In the preliminary races, Davis qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.65, which was then tied for the seventh best time in program history, on Thursday. Davis followed that up on Friday with a personal best time of 11.61 in the 100-meter dash to advance to the finals.
Qualifying student-athletes will compete next at the NCAA West First Round May 27-30 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
