CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team wrapped up their fall opener at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open Sunday at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
The Vaqueros traveled to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) to compete against the Islanders and the UIW Cardinals, both fellow members of the Southland Conference, in its fall opener.
 
Sophomore East Tennessee State transfer Mariangel Estrella earned one of UTRGV's two wins in Flight A during the quarterfinal round, defeating UIW's Ine Lamprecht in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in Flight A. Estrella did not see any more singles action in the opener.
 
Junior Luna Buijtenhuijs picked up the second win of the quarterfinal round, knocking off UIW's Jana Ruzic in a hard-fought, three-set battle. Buijtenhuijs dropped the first set 6-3 before battling back with a 6-4 win in the second set. Buijtenhuijs carried the momentum into the deciding tiebreaker, winning 10-5, to take the match. TAMUCC's Kseniya Ramanouskaya spoiled Buijtenhuijs' run in the semifinals.
 
After dropping her opening round matchup to TAMUCC's Adriana Jimenez Casado in Flight B, senior Hitakamya Narwal earned her first singles win of the fall in the West Semifinal, defeating the Islanders' Jazmin Ganbat 7-5, 6-0.
 
In a series of extra matches, junior North Carolina A&T transfer Juana Gomez Weiss earned her first win as a Vaquero, defeating Ruzic 6-1, 6-2. Senior Rhea Makesar defeated Lamprecht 6-0, 6-3 to earn her first win of the fall.
 
Meanwhile, freshman Mirka Delaney earned her first collegiate wins after defeating Lamprecht in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (10:8) and knocking off Ruzic in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (12:10).
 
Senior Madeleine Joffe capped off UTRGV's singles success with a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10:3) win over Ganbat.
 
Estrella and Gomez Weiss earned the Vaqueros lone doubles win of the tournament, defeating UIW's Amelie Montalvo and Victoria Jordana Salcedo Franklin in a back-and-forth, 7-6 (8:6) battle.
 
UTRGV returns to action Sept. 25-27 at the Rice Invite in Houston.
