Professor Frederick Ernst, Ph.D. began as the UTPA Faculty Athletic Representative during the 2012-13 academic year.
 
Currently a tenured professor in the Department of Psychology as well as the coordinator of the BCBA Concentration of the Experimental Psychology graduate program, Ernst is no stranger to working in sports. He was the Commissioner of the Brentwood (Tennessee) Babe Ruth Baseball program for 300 13-18 year-olds from 1998 through 2003 while a professor with joint appointments in the Psychiatry and Family Medicine departments of Meharry Medical College.
 
Ernst began his teaching career in 1976 as a professor in the Psychiatry Department of the new Medical School of Wright State University in Dayton where he was also on the research faculty of the Cox Heart Institute at WSU. He also maintained a private practice in clinical psychology in Dayton until 1987, when he moved to Nashville to join the faculty of MMC. Before leaving Nashville he also had a joint appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at Vanderbilt University.
 
Ernst has had research grants from NIH, NATO, Health Services and Resources Administration, the National Hemophilia Foundation and the American Heart Association. and has served as a grant reviewer for NIH, NOAA, and Homeland Security. He has been a guest editor for several scientific journals and has 40 publications in professional journals with 75 presentations to scientific conferences in eight different countries.
 
A 1968 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor of science in psychology, Ernst earned his master of arts in clinical psychology in 1971 from Wichita State University and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1976 from The Ohio State University.
 
He currently lives with his wife, Joy, and stepdaughter, Brianna Coffee, in McAllen where they are enjoying a new house for which construction was completed on Christmas Eve last year
