Broncs Try to Keep Trend Against Texas Lutheran

EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs intend to keep the "trend" going against Texas Lutheran College in their home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday on the UT Pan American soccer field.

The Broncs lost the championship round of the St. Edward's University Tournament last weekend.

The "trend" Eloy Moran mentions is the fact the Broncs have never lost to Texas Lutheran since he became head coach in 1986.

The Broncs stomped Houston Baptist University and St. Edward's to advance to the final against Oklahoma City University in Austin.

UT Pan American scored three times in the final 30 minutes to overtake Houston Baptist, 3-2. The Broncs overwhelmed St. Edward's, 5-2, before bowing to Oklahoma City, 3-1. They are 2-3-1.

Texas Lutheran lost to Oklahoma City, 2-0, at the tournament.

Damien Morguia of Buenos, Aires, Argentina, scored twice to ignite the comeback against Houston Baptist including the game-winner with five minutes to play. Carlos Juvera of McAllen hit the game-tying goal.

Ronny Cabrera, Morquia, Salvador Garcia, Juvera and Bernie Ortegon all contributed to the 5-2 thrashing of the host Hilltoppers-- a win which propelled the Broncs into the final.

Oklahoma City scored early and later added a penalty-kick to grab a 2-0 lead. The Broncs had troubles with offside calls.

Two goals by Cabrera were nullified by the linesman's flag.

With 10 minutes left, Pedro Diaz sailed into the penalty area and punched it by a sprawling goalie to make it 2-1.

Oklahoma City, which played most of the game with 10 men, sealed the victory when a shot screamed passed a diving Fredy Sanguinetti.

Moran admitted his players got frustrated.

"For a while, we got caught playing their game," he said. "It's hard to play three straight games without a deep bench."
