AUSTIN - Top scorer
Mario Ribera was injured and four of his Bronc teammates were ejected Saturday when the University of Texas-Pan American lost a bitter soccer overtime to Centenary, 3-2.
The Broncs are down to exactly 11 men, due to injuries and the red-card ejections which ban a player from his next game.
Shorthanded UTPA will battle Texas Lutheran at 10 a.m. Sunday in the consolation finals of the St. Edward's Tournament.
Ribera suffered a badly sprained ankle when fouled early in what UTPA Coach Eloy Moran called "a vicious game." Ribera, a sophomore from Bolivia, ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring, NCAA Division I, in 1992.
After Ribera was hurt, teammates
Shane Hurley and
Rafael Cardenas were ejected in a shoving match that erupted. One of the Centenary Gentlemen also was ejected.
Despite playing most of the game with nine men to Centenary's 10, the Broncs rallied on an unassisted 18-yard goal by
Jesus Tavarez to tie it at halftime, 1-1. Then
Victor Ramos gave the Broncs a 2-1 lead in the second half by punching home a rebound of his corner kick.
Centenary tied it, 2-2, with six minutes left in regulation time, then won on a penalty kick with five minutes left in overtime.
Alector Cardenas of the Broncs also suffered a bad ankle sprain when clipped from behind in the first half. In the second half two other Broncs,
Eric Jarvis and Tony Cardenas, were ejected for deliberate fouls to keep an opponent from scoring.
The referee allowed the game to finish with seven Broncs against 10 Centenary players.
"Overall I was disappointed in the fact they got ejected, but we did not quit," Moran said. "We have 17 men on the trip. Four can't play Sunday because of ejections, and Mario and Alector are hurt. We may have to play our goalie,
Albert Flores, away from the goal.
