UTPA Soccer Team Loses to Texas Lutheran

AUSTIN - Ariel Larro from Argentina exploded for three goals in the final 33 minutes Sunday to lift Texas Lutheran over Texas-Pan American, 3-0, ending a bitter first week for the Bronc soccer team.

UTPA's Broncs played six men short--four were ejected and two injured during a 3-2 overtime loss to Centenary on Satruday.

All 11 Broncs had to go the entire 90 minutes Sunday.

Larro burst loose to score on a header at 57 minutes, 1-on-1 at 80 minutes and a penalty kick with four minutes remaining.

The Broncs ended their season-opening trip to the St. Edward's University by losing in the consolation finals for a 0-2-1 record.

"Our goalie, Albert Flores, played forward the entire game," said Coach Eloy Moran of UTPA. "Jonathan McCurley did an excellent job of replacing him in the net and made some excellent saves. Jon had 19 saves in the 90 minutes."

The coach also praised sweeper Arnoldo Cardenas and midfielder Jesus (Chuy) Tavarez for playing well in adversity.

Moran decided, on the advice of student trainer Fred Gonzalez, to sit out two regulars, Mario Ribera and Alector Cardenas, who suffered bad ankle sprains Saturday.

"It's very essential to have them ready next weekend when we play at Arkansas-Little Rock and North Texas, two teams in our conference," Moran said. "We're physically depleted after playing two overtime games here. But I hope to be prepared for next week, mentally, physically and emotionally. We've got to recoup fast."

Looking ahead to the Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship in Edinburg Nov. 4-6, Moran added "The important thing is the confernece championship. That's the objective for hitting the road and playing hard teams."

The four Broncs who were ejected from Saturday's bitter 3-2 loss to Centenary in overtime were Shane Hurley and Rafael Cardenas, for shoving opponents after Ribera was injured, and Tony Cardenas and Eric Jarvis for deliberate fouls when the Broncs were shorthanded.
