EDINBURG - UTPA freshman Pablo Villarreal from Edinburg North has put a new punch into the University of Texas-Pan American's soccer attack, and the Broncs will ne it at 2 p.m. Saturday when ending their schedule against Schreiner College.
Villarreal joined the squad late in the season. The 5-foot-4 shooter teamed up with junior forward
Luis Cardenas to gain results.
The Broncs barely survived, scoring in the final minute at Kerrville Oct. 13, to subdue much-improved Schreiner, 3-2.
Schreiner owns a tall, tough squad and a 9-9 record. Like the Broncs, the Mountaineers have beaten teams this season they never defeated before. The Broncs stand 3-11 against U.S. college teams (5-12 counting exhibition games) but surprised South Alabama, 3-1.
Villarreal and Cardenas combined to keep pressure on South Alabama and also played well in a 3-0 loss to powerful Vanderbilt, in which the Sun Belt Conference leaders led 1-0 until the final five minutes.
"Schreiner has a very good record, especially since they just moved up to the second division, and I'm pretty sure they are looking for an upset here," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, UTPA coach.
"We have to be sure we play like a home team and an NCAA Division team. We won in injury time at Schreiner although we dominated the final 10 minutes. They have some big players."
After injuries to five starters handicapped the Broncs all year, they escaped their last two hard-fought games, the 3-1 upset of South Alabama and a 4-1 loss to their powerful Aumni, without any new serious injuries.
Dr. Paredes plans to stick with basically the same starting lineup that performed so well in late October.
