Trinity Rallies in Overtime to End UTPA Soccer Year, 2-1

EDINBURG - Jaime Ramirez smashed a 15-yarder into the top of the net in the 114th minute Sunday to rally Trinity University over Texas-Pan American in soccer, 2-1.

Ramirez, a 5-foot-8 junior from Carrizo Springs, Tex., took an assist from Brent Thomas to save Trinity's 16-game winning streak.

Shawn Jones of Dallas nailed a 5-yard rebound off a hard shot by Luis Cardenas to give Texas-Pan American a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first half.

Clint Regier, 6-foot-3 midfielder from Oklahoma City, equalized at 1-1 for Trinity in the 78th minute when he banged a penalty shot off one hand of the diving UTPA goalkeeper, Roger Cantu.

Cantu earned 11 saves while Trinity peppered him with 25 shots on goal. He stopped everything except the penalty shot until the final six minutes of the 120-minute contest. Trinity took 13 corner kicks to UTPA's three. Cantu made three brilliant diving saves.

Goalkeeper Jared Newton of Trinity had an easier time of it by making four saves on UTPA's 12 shots.

The Trinity Tigers from San Antonio improved to a 17-1 record and, ranked No. 8 nationally in NCAA Division III, expected to be invited to the national playoffs later Sunday. Assistant Coach Mike Alderson coached the Tigers Sunday while Paul McGinlay, the ehad coach, stayed home to direct a soccer playoff game by the TU women.

UTPA ended its season 4-12 in NCAA Division I after adding this extra game at Trinity's request.

Ryan Knell of UTPA was ejected in te 86th mintue for shoving an opponent with his forearm and the Broncs finished a man short the final 34 mintues. Trinity, outshot 9-6 in the first half, appled constant offensive pressure in the second half and overtime.
