ROAD WOES CONTINUE; BRONCS LOSE 70-63 TO COUGARS

CHICAGO, Illinois- The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team could not hold on to a late second half lead as the Broncs dropped their 10th straight game 70-63 on Saturday to Chicago State University. The loss was the Broncs second straight in Great West Conference play.

The Broncs (3-16, 0-2 GWC) held a lead for the majority of the first half after Matt Mierzycki put UTPA in front for the first time with his lay-up at 15:56 remaining in the opening half which made the score 10-9. The Cougars (5-14, 2-1 GWC) reclaimed the lead a few possessions later on Jonathan Montgomery's three-pointer with 13:20 remaining giving CSU a 15-14 lead.

The Broncs responded with a 13-3 run capped off by a Brandon Provost three-pointer giving UTPA a 26-18 lead with 6:00 to go until the intermission. Texas-Pan American led at the break 32-28 at the break.

The Cougars reclaimed the lead in the second half when Victor Scott hit a three with 14:13 to play. Scott's three gave CSU a 41-40 lead. The two teams traded the lead over the next four possessions. The Cougars took a six point lead at 50-44 with 10:40 to play when Jamil Harris hit a jumper.

Texas-Pan American responded with a 7-0 run to re-claim the lead at 51-50 on Jared Maree's three. The team's then traded the lead six more times before Provost hit another Bronc trey giving UTPA a 60-59 lead with 4:09 to play. The Cougars took the lead for good at 61-60 on Carl Montgomery's lay-up with 3:01 remaining. CSU ended the game on an 11-3 run.

 Provost scored a career high 18-points and added five rebounds to lead the Broncs in the losing effort. Mierzycki chipped in with 12 points and three boards. Julius Hearn chipped in with eight and five assists Aaron Urbanus scored seven points and dished out four helpers.

Chicago State had four players score in double figures Saturday including 24 from Carl Montgomery, who added 12 boards for the double-double. Antonio Lofton added 14 points and six rebounds. Harris and Jonathan Montgomery each chipped in with 10 with Harris dishing out a game high six assists. The Cougars shot 53% from the field on Saturday and won the battle of the boards 33-24.

The Broncs continue their season long road swing next Saturday when they travel up to Houston to face Houston Baptist with a 7:35 scheduled tip-off.
