EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team wraps up their season opening five-game homestand on Tuesday night as they place host to UT-system and Rio Grande Valley rival the University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College Scorpions.

The Broncs (4-0) are off to another fast start in 2011 after winning all four games last weekend in the Al Ogletree Classic. The Broncs swept a double-header Sunday with a 9-1 victory over Illinois-Chicago and a 5-0 shutout victory over Saint Louis U.

A win on Tuesday would be the first 5-0 start for UTPA since 1988. The Broncs finished that season with a 33-25 record. The Broncs also started 2010 4-0, but fell in their fifth game of the season to the University of Texas in Austin.

The Broncs are led by senior outfielder Stuart MacInnes who leads the team in hitting with a .429 average, with a pair of doubles, one homer and 2 RBI. The Broncs average six runs per contest this season.

The starting pitching has also been superb in the opening four games for the Broncs. The rotation is a combined 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA and an opponent's BA against of .233 and striking out 16 batters. The complete pitching staff has allowed just four extra base hits on the season and has an ERA of 1.80.

The Scorpions (10-2), who compete in the Red River Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) are off to a fantastic start. UTB/TSC has a 5-1 conference record to start their season. The Scorpions have not faced a Division-1 team yet this season.

UTB/TSC has a strong pitching staff as well. The Scorpions are led by ace Danny Gidora who is 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA. Kevin Chapman also has an unblemished record at 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA. The Scorpions have the fourth best team ERA in the NAIA at 1.74.

Shortstop Felix Fanaselle is the top Scorpion hitter with a team leading .432 average. He also leads the team in doubles (14) and RBI (11). Matt Ginn leads the team in homers with 3, and is second on the club in RBI with 10. The Scorpions bat at a .285 clip as a team, with seven Scorpions batting over .300.

The Broncs lead the all-time series since both teams became four-year baseball programs at 4-0. The four wins came with UTPA earning two wins in each of the last two seasons. Digging into the history books, the Broncs (competing as Pan American College) had a 5-0 record against Texas Southmost College with five wins combined in the 1958 and 1963 seasons.

The Broncs swept the Scorpions for two wins in the 2010 Al Ogletree Classic last season. The Broncs and Scorpions pounded out a combined 40 runs and 34 hits in a 23-17 UTPA victory in last year's UTPA home opener. The Broncs won the second game of the season series 13-9 in comeback fashion, scoring nine unanswered runs to earn the victory.

The Scorpions will start either Julian Moya (1-1, 2.31) or Zach Armstrong (0-0, 5.19) while the Broncs have Kyle Kotchie (NR) penciled in to take the ball.

After Tuesday, the Broncs travel to College Station for a two game series against Texas A&M beginning on March 1st. UTPA will return home on March 8th for a doubleheader against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
