FIVE RUN SIXTH LIFTS BRONCS PAST SCORPIONS

EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of Texas Pan American baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to get the 10-5 victory over the University of Texas-Brownsville Scorpions Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium snapping the their seven-game losing streak.

The Scorpions (32-22) got the scoring started in the first inning against Kyle Kotchie. Peter Maldonado reached with a single to left field, moved to second on a fielding error and then stole third. After a walk to Felix Fanaselle, Matt Ginn hit an RBI single to left center field that allowed Maldonado to score giving UTB the 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the second inning, the Scorpions added to their lead. Adam Miller and Nick Loftus were hit by pitches and then both moved up a base after Jorge Carmolina dropped a sacrifice bunt. Maldonado followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Miller from third. Fanaselle then hit an RBI single through the right side scoring Loftus from third making it a 3-0 ballgame.

Vincent Mejia led off the bottom of the second with a walk and then moved to second after a throwing error by the shortstop. Two outs later, Stuart MacInnes hit an RBI double off the left field wall that drove in Mejia from second cutting the Scorpions lead 3-1.

The Broncs (17-17) picked up another run in the bottom of the third against Sam Buchanan. With two outs in the inning, Mike McCarthy walked and Angel Ibanez singled through the right side. Mejia then hit an RBI single to left center field allowing McCarthy to score to make it 3-2 UTB.

An RBI single by Maldonado in the top of the sixth that scored Joel Fernandez extended the Scorpions lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Broncs' offense awoke. Mejia and Roger Bernal started the inning with back-to-back walks. Iradier Hernandez followed with a single to center field that would have loaded the bases but a throwing error by the shortstop allowed Mejia to score from third. After two outs, Alex Carnall hit a three-run home run into the left field bullpen. Adrian De La Rosa followed with a double and then came into score on an RBI single by McCarthy giving the Broncs the 7-4 lead.

UTPA added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Carnall, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the game, hit an RBI single scoring Mejia from third extending their lead to 8-4.

After the Scorpions added a run in the top of the eighth to make it 8-5, Angel Ibanez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-5.

Leo Chang pitched a scoreless ninth giving the Broncs the 10-5 victory and giving him his first save of the season.

The Broncs hit the road as they travel to Houston for a four-game conference series against Houston Baptist University. Game one starts Friday afternoon and will be followed with a double-header Saturday and the finale on Sunday.
