Maree Reaches 1,000 Points Plateau as Men's Basketball Falls to Utah Valley

Box Score

EDINBURG, Texas – Senior guard Jared Maree converted a three-point play early in the second half to become the 21st player in University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball history to score at least 1,000 points in a 77-69 loss to the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Maree scored a game-high and season-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. He also hit 4-of-5 attempts from the free throw line while adding six rebounds. Maree is the first Bronc to reach 1,000 points since Mire Chatman (2000-02) and now has 1,008 career points. Maree needs 11 more points to catch Steve Heard (1,019, 1957-61) for 20th place on the all-time list.

Maree's milestone came with 17:45 remaining in the second half and gave the Broncs a 39-35 lead.

The Wolverines (14-10, 4-0 GWC) had an early lead at 14-9, but Jesus Delgado hit a bank shot and a three-pointer to power a 7-0 run that saw the Broncs (7-17, 2-2 GWC) go ahead 16-14.

Delgado finished with 13 points while Brandon Provost scored 10 points.

Taylor Brown hit a three-pointer to put the Wolverines ahead 23-22 with 8:25 to go in the first half, but Delgado scored off his own rebound to spark a 10-1 run, punctuated by an Aaron Urbanus jumper, to give the Broncs a 34-24 lead.

The Broncs maintained that lead until late in the second half, when Alfonzo Hubbard scored nine points to power a 14-0 run that put the Wolverines ahead 66-57 with 1:42 remaining.

Maree ended the run by hitting a free throw and then a lay-up off a steal to bring the Broncs within 66-60 with 1:09 to go, but the Wolverines went 11-for-12 from the free throw line to put the game on ice.

Isaiah Williams led four Wolverines in double-figures scoring with 21 points. Holton Hunsaker scored 14 points, all of which came from the free throw line (14-for-15), Hubbard scored 13 points and Keith Thompson scored 10 points.

The Wolverines went 28-for-34 (82.4%) from the foul line. The Broncs were 15-for-18 (83.3%).

The Broncs return to action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they host the University of North Dakota at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
