EDINBURG, Texas -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team opens the season against the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions (11-5, 6-0 Red River Athletic Conference) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium box office beginning at 6:00 p.m. To purchase tickets in advance, call UTPA Athletics at 956-665-2221.

•The Broncs are 6-0 all-time against the Scorpions, with all six games played at Edinburg Baseball Stadium over the last three seasons.
•The Broncs are 27-28 all-time on opening day.

  • The Broncs are opening the season at home for the third year in a row
  • Last season, the Broncs beat the Scorpions 4-3 and 10-5.
  • While going 6-0 against the Scorpions at Edinburg Baseball Stadium over the last three seasons, the Broncs have won by an average of 5.8 runs per game. The Broncs' largest margin of victory was in their first meeting after Manny Mantrana became head coach, 15-2 (4/8/09).
  • The highest scoring game between these two teams came on February 26, 2010, a 23-17 Broncs' victory.
  • The Broncs met Texas Southmost College in 1958, a game the Broncs won 11-7. TSC, which is currently in a partnership with UTB, was a junior college at the time.
  • The Scorpions opened their season on January 26 and are already 11-5. Two of their losses were at NCAA Division II opponent Texas A&M Kingsville, 8-5 and 3-6 in a doubleheader (2/14/12). Those are the Scorpions' only two road games to date.

  • The Broncs return 20 players from last year's team while welcoming 12 junior college transfers and three freshmen.
  • All five Broncs who hit .300 or better return in Mike McCarthy (.377), Angel Ibanez (.348), Roger Bernal (.343), Vincent Mejia (.342) and Brandon Roush (.313). Mejia led the Broncs in home runs (4), doubles (16), runs scored (45) and walks (40), McCarthy led the team in RBI (45) and Ibanez led the team in triples (6) and stolen bases (13).
